Area Rugs

Area rugs are an easy way to refresh the look of a room and add visual interest and dimension. Proper placement of your area rugs is key to bringing the room together.

  • Dining Room: The dining table is the focal point of this room, and your area rug should be centered underneath the table. Be sure to purchase a rug large enough to allow for chairs to remain fully on top even when pushed out from the table.
  • Living Rooms: If you have a smaller size living room, you have two area rug options. You can opt for a rug 5’x8’ in size that floats between the furniture by being placed underneath the coffee table. Placing the rug about 6” in front of the sofa will anchor the space. Your second option is to purchase a more prominent area rug that can accommodate all furniture to give the room a unified look. Larger livings rooms will look great with a rug around 8’x10’. The sofa’s front legs should be on the carpet, and it should extend beyond the sides of the sofa.
  • Bedrooms: The size of an area rug for a bedroom depends largely upon the size of your bed. Sizing generally indicates a 5’x8’ rug for a full-size bed, an 8’x10’ rug for a queen-size bed, and a 9’x12’ rug for a king-size bed. Place the area rug partially underneath the bed by laying it perpendicular to it and pulling it underneath. The edge of the rug should be several inches away from nightstands and be about halfway under the bed. This placement maximizes usable rug space and gives you a comfy surface to step on when you leave your bed.

You can use rugs to create an optical illusion in any room. A rug that is too small will make your room look disconnected. When in doubt, always opt for the larger rug.   • Consider your lifestyle. Do you have a large family? A sectional may be best to fit your whole family. Do you have young children or pets? A sofa with stain-resistant upholstery will be able to withstand more wear and tear.
  • How will you orient your sofa? The most common placements are against a wall or in the center of the room with all sides visible.
  • Measure, measure, measure! You don’t want to choose your ideal sofa only to have it not fit through your front door or through any corridors necessary to reach your living room.

Decorating a Dreamy Bedroom

It’s best to choose your bedroom furniture first and coordinate other room accents around it. Light-colored furniture will make the room appear more spacious but requires a gentle touch as it will quickly show scratches or dents. Darker material will conceal blemishes but can put any dust on display. Regardless of the bedroom furniture you choose, ensure the bedroom has sufficient lighting.   • Bedroom: Your bedroom is where you retreat to relax and unwind. The artwork in the room should reflect that. Large scale pieces are best and should be hung at eye level. Choose pieces with subdued, soothing colors and a minimal frame.
  • Living Room: This can be the most intimidating but fun room to decorate. You generally have a lot of space to cover, and guests in your home will see the wall decor you choose.
