Choosing flooring for your home can seem like an impossible task. There are so many materials, styles, and color options available today. How do you decide on one? What to Consider with New Floors
Before you make a final decision, there are a few questions you need to ask yourself. First consider where the room is located and how it will function. Floors located in basements and ground floors are more susceptible to moisture damage than floors on upper floors. Entryways and play areas for kids will also need more durable flooring than a sitting room or bedroom.
Consider the climate of where you live. Prolonged amounts of humidity can warp wood and cause mold in the carpet. Tile and laminate flooring are great alternatives in humid locations.
A new floor can change the tone and mood of any room. Think about whether the new flooring will coordinate with your existing décor or if you may want to refresh your décor to match your new floor. Lighter colors usually make a room feel more spacious though they can show stains and wear quicker than darker floors. A darker floor can make your space feel cozy but may also show dust and pet hair. Don’t forget to coordinate your new floors with existing flooring in neighboring rooms.
Does anyone in your home have allergies? Hard flooring like tile, vinyl, and laminate holds fewer allergens and dust mites than carpet. It is also easier to clean using a broom or dust mop. You can add visual interest and pops of color by using area rugs and other room décor.
Laminate Flooring Guide
Laminate is a durable and affordable flooring that can look just like authentic hardwood. Its durability makes it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas of your home. Laminate typically varies in thickness from 7mm to 12mm. A thicker style will bend less on an uneven subfloor and will also reduce noise.
Use a cleaner specifically designed for laminate flooring. Take care when using water-based cleaner unless your floor is waterproof. You can help prevent scratches by sweeping at least once per week. Clean any spills or tracked in dirt quickly to reduce the risk of damaging your floor. Using area rugs or doormats in entryways is an excellent way to reduce wear on the floor and collect dirt and moisture.
Vinyl Flooring Guide
Vinyl flooring has come a long way in recent years. Vinyl tile can give you a look and feel of genuine stone or ceramic tile without the expense. Vinyl is susceptible to fading, so protect your floor from direct sunlight. You can do this by closing your shades in the afternoon or using area rugs. A central selling point of vinyl flooring is its easy-to-clean, no-wax surface. Sweep your floor regularly and use a damp mop on occasion to keep it looking like new. Spills are no problem. Types of Carpet
- Cut Pile: This type achieves durability through the fiber used, the density of tufts, and the amount of twist in the yarn. The more twist in the yarn, the more the carpet will hold its shape, making it an ideal choice for high-traffic areas.
- Plush Cut Pile: This style is very dense and feels luxurious underfoot. It prominently shows footprints, and vacuum marks, so it is best suited to low-traffic areas and formal rooms.
- Textured Plush: Decorative and versatile, this style's texture helps conceal footprints and vacuum marks. It’s an excellent choice for busy households.
- Loop Pile: Featuring level and multilevel loops, the yarn tips aren’t exposed, which makes this type of carpet wear exceptionally well. It’s perfect for high-traffic areas, such as hallways.
- Level Loop Pile: The loops are all the same height, providing a uniform look. It’s well suited to high-traffic areas in your home.
- Multilevel Loop Pile: This style features two or three distinct loop heights which adds pattern, dimension, and durability.
- Cut Loop Pile: A combination of cut and looped yarns provides a variety of available textures. The multicolor effect of the different yarn heights helps to hide dirt and stains.
